Dry February 2027: dates, meaning and a free tracker
Twenty-eight days without alcohol, from Monday, February 1 to Sunday, February 28, 2027. In 2027, February is exactly four weeks, Monday to Sunday. This page covers what Dry February means, how it compares with an alcohol-free January, the Dry Feb fundraiser in Canada, and a free contract, calendar and tracker for the month.
Free. No email, no sign-up. About two minutes.
Before you start. If you drink heavily or every day, stopping suddenly can cause withdrawal, which can be dangerous. Talk to a doctor or a local alcohol support service before you start, so you can stop safely.
What does Dry February mean?
Dry February means taking the whole of February off alcohol. Some people choose it instead of Dry January, because their January is full of travel or celebrations. Others use it as a second try after a January that did not go to plan, or as the next step after a month of cutting back in January. There is no single official version: you set the rules and the start date, and you decide what counts, for example whether alcohol-free beer is fine.
Dry February 2027 dates
| Starts | Monday, February 1, 2027 |
|---|---|
| Ends | Sunday, February 28, 2027 |
| Length | 28 days (2027 is not a leap year) |
| Weekends | Four: February 6-7, 13-14, 20-21 and 27-28 |
| Valentine's Day | Sunday, February 14 |
| Long weekend | Monday, February 15: Presidents' Day in the US, Family Day in several Canadian provinces |
Valentine's Day and the long weekend fall back to back, from Saturday, February 13 to Monday, February 15. That is the month's biggest test, so plan those three days in the first week: where you will eat, what you will order and what you will say if someone offers you a drink.
Why February?
- It is shorter. Twenty-eight days instead of thirty-one. For a first alcohol-free month, three fewer days can make the goal feel within reach.
- The holidays are over. New Year's Eve, New Year's Day and the last holiday get-togethers are behind you, and most people's calendars have settled back into a normal routine.
- A second chance. If January did not go as planned, February is a clean restart rather than a failure. What you learned about your hard evenings in January becomes your February plan.
- Four tidy weeks. In 2027 the month starts on a Monday and ends on a Sunday, so every week is a full week, which makes a weekly review simple.
Dry February or Dry January?
| January 2027 | February 2027 | |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 31 days | 28 days |
| Starts | Friday, January 1 | Monday, February 1 |
| Holidays in the month | New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day | Valentine's Day, Presidents' Day or Family Day |
| Organized campaigns | Dry January, run by Alcohol Change UK | Dry Feb, a fundraiser in Canada |
Neither month is better for everyone. January lines up with New Year's resolutions and has the larger organized campaign; February is shorter and quieter. Pick the month you can start with a plan. Some people do both: a cut-back January, then a fully dry February. For the January version, see the Dry January planner.
Dry February in Canada: Dry Feb
In Canada, "Dry Feb" is the name of an organized fundraising challenge: participants go alcohol-free for February and collect donations from friends and family. It is run by a company called Ezy Raise. For years it raised money for the Canadian Cancer Society, which described its 2024 campaign as its ninth annual Dry Feb (Canadian Cancer Society, 2024). The current Dry Feb website says proceeds now benefit CAMH, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (dryfeb.ca). If you want to fundraise, check their site for the 2027 details.
Challenge Contract is a separate, free planner. You can use it on its own or alongside a fundraiser: a signed contract, a printable 28-day calendar and a daily tracker.
Challenge Contract is not affiliated with the Canadian Cancer Society or Dry Feb. We are also not affiliated with Ezy Raise or CAMH.
A four-week plan
| Days | Focus |
|---|---|
| Feb 1-7 | Sign your contract on Monday. Stock alcohol-free drinks at home. Plan the February 13-15 weekend now. |
| Feb 8-14 | Tell the people you see most often. For Valentine's Day, book a place with good alcohol-free options, or cook at home. |
| Feb 15-21 | The long weekend ends on Monday. Plan something for the extra day off: a walk, a movie, a long breakfast. |
| Feb 22-28 | Review the month. Decide what March looks like: back to before, a few limits, or another month. |
Rules for Dry February
The main rule is simple. The others make it easier to keep. Pick three to five:
- "No alcohol"
- "Alcohol-free drink when I want a drink"
- "Plan alcohol-free evenings"
- "Tell one friend I'm doing it"
- "Log my day in the tracker"
How to use this site for Dry February
- Sign a contract with yourself. Open the contract builder with the Dry February rules filled in. Check the dates, add your name, keep the rules that fit and sign it.
- Print the calendar or save a wallpaper. The printout has a checkbox for each rule on every day. The wallpaper puts your rules on your lock screen.
- Check in every evening. The daily tracker keeps your streak visible, can add a daily reminder to your calendar and lets you back up your check-ins. It needs no account, and nothing is sent to a server.
If you slip
One drink does not erase the days you already kept. Mark the day honestly and go back to your rules the next morning. The rule on the contract is never miss twice: one slip is a single day, two in a row is how an old routine comes back. If you find you cannot stop, or you get symptoms such as anxiety, sweating or shaking when you cut down, those can be signs of withdrawal (NHS). Talk to a doctor before trying again.
What health bodies say
The NHS says the less you drink, the lower the health risks (NHS), and the CDC says drinking less is better for your health than drinking more (CDC). Studies of people who took a month off alcohol are collected, with sources, on the benefits page. Most of that research looked at January, but the month you choose does not change what alcohol does.
