Sober October 2026: a free tracker and calendar
A month without alcohol, from Thursday, October 1 to Saturday, October 31, 2026. Write your rules down, keep a calendar where you can see it, and check off each day. If October has already started, you can start today.
Before you start. If you drink heavily or every day, stopping suddenly can cause withdrawal, which can be dangerous. Talk to a doctor or a local alcohol support service before you start, so you can stop safely (NHS).
What is Sober October?
Sober October is a simple idea: no alcohol for the 31 days of October. People do it to take a break before the holiday season, to save money, or just to see what a month off is like.
The name has a few sources. In the UK, the charity Macmillan Cancer Support has long run a sponsored fundraiser called Go Sober for October, where friends and family sponsor you to stay off alcohol for the month. For 2026, the UK fundraiser has a new home: Alcohol Change UK says it is now the official charity behind Sober October. In the US, the phrase also spread through podcasts. The comedians on The Joe Rogan Experience, for example, made a yearly Sober October challenge a recurring topic (episode #1177, "Sober October 2").
You do not need to join anything to take part. Challenge Contract is a separate, free tool: a one-page contract you sign with yourself, a printable 31-day calendar, a lock-screen wallpaper and a daily tracker that stays in your browser. If you want to fundraise, you can use it alongside a charity challenge.

Starting mid-month? It is not too late
Plenty of people decide to do Sober October on the 5th or the 12th. You have two good options:
- Start today, finish on October 31. Count the days that remain and make that your challenge. Fourteen alcohol-free days are still fourteen days.
- Start today, do a full 31 days. Your month simply ends in November. This works well if you want the complete challenge, or if November is a quieter month for you.
In the contract builder, choose Today as your start date. The length menu offers 7, 14, 21, 30 and 31 days, so pick the one closest to what is left of October, or keep 31 for a full month. Your calendar and tracker follow the dates you choose.
How to set up Sober October here
- Sign a contract with yourself. Open the contract builder with the Sober October rules already filled in, such as "No alcohol", "Plan alcohol-free evenings" and "Log my day in the tracker". Add your name, keep three to six rules, and sign it.
- Print the calendar or save a wallpaper. Printing gives you your signed contract plus a 31-day calendar sheet with a box for each rule on every day. Or save the contract as a lock-screen wallpaper.
- Check in every evening. Open the tracker before bed and mark the day. It takes a few seconds, works offline and sends nothing about your contract to a server.

Enter what a usual week of drinking looks like for you, including bars and restaurants. If you started late, change the number of alcohol-free days.
How it works: drinks per week divided by 7, times the number of days, times your average price. Decimals are fine, for example 2.5 drinks or 6.50 per drink.
Tips for social events
October is full of evenings that test a no-alcohol month: game days, birthdays, harvest parties and Halloween. A little planning goes a long way.
- Decide your drink before you arrive. Sparkling water with lime, an alcohol-free beer or a soda in a glass. Having something in your hand means fewer offers.
- Have one short line ready. "I'm doing Sober October" or "Not tonight, I'm driving" is enough. Most people move on quickly.
- Tell one person. A friend who knows can order for you and change the subject when needed.
- Plan your exit. Decide when you will leave, and how you will get home, before you go.
- Host something. A dinner, a movie night or a morning hike puts you in charge of the plan and the drinks.
- Mark the evening on your calendar. Checking off a hard day is satisfying, and it reminds you of what you managed next time.

What if I slip?
One drink does not erase the days you already kept. Mark the day honestly, then go back to your rules the next morning. The contract uses a simple rule for this: never miss twice. One slip is a single day; two in a row is how an old routine comes back. Write down where you were and what you felt just before, so you can plan for that moment next time.
If you find you cannot stop, or you get symptoms such as anxiety, sweating or shaking when you cut down, those can be signs of withdrawal (NHS). Talk to a doctor before trying again.
After October
Many people who finish Sober October like the result enough to do it again. January is the other popular month for a break, and the same tools work there: see the Dry January planner for 2027 dates and a 31-day calendar. If you want a longer routine that also covers training, reading and water, the 75 Soft challenge keeps alcohol to social occasions for 75 days.
