No Spend November 2026: rules, a printable calendar and a Black Friday plan
Thirty days of essentials only, from Sunday, November 1 to Monday, November 30, 2026, right before the holiday season. Thanksgiving and Black Friday both fall inside the month, so this page is about planning for them in advance instead of pretending they are not there.
New to the idea? The no spend month guide covers the basics, including a calculator for what you could keep. This page covers what is different about November.
No Spend November 2026 dates
| Starts | Sunday, November 1, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Ends | Monday, November 30, 2026 |
| Length | 30 days |
| Weekends | Sunday, November 1, then November 7-8, 14-15, 21-22 and 28-29 |
| Thanksgiving (US) | Thursday, November 26 |
| Black Friday | Friday, November 27 |
| Cyber Monday | Monday, November 30, the last day of the challenge |
Because the month starts on a Sunday, you get a quiet day to set up before the first workweek. It ends on Cyber Monday, so the last day is also the day with the most sale emails. Plan for that one now, not on the day.
Why a no-spend month in November?
For many households, November is the month before the most expensive month of the year. A no-spend November does three useful things before December arrives.
- It frees up money for the holidays. What you do not spend on takeout and impulse buys in November can go straight into a gift and travel budget for December.
- It shows you your defaults. A month of logging purchases shows where your money goes on autopilot, just before the busiest spending season.
- It puts space between you and the sales. Holiday promotions often start before Black Friday itself. A month with a waiting rule lets you decide what you want before the ads decide for you.
No Spend November rules
Start with the same essentials as any no-spend month: housing, utilities, insurance, debt payments, groceries from a list, medicine and the transport you need. Keep paying all of them. Then add a few rules for November:
- "No non-essential purchases." The main rule. The others support it.
- "Thanksgiving is a planned exception with a set amount." Write the amount on your contract before November 1.
- "Sale or not, wants go on the list." A discount does not turn a want into a need.
- "No shopping apps." Unsubscribe from store emails and delete or log out of shopping apps in the first week.
- "Log every purchase." One line each: date, what and how much. It makes the review on December 1 a ten-minute job.
Keep three to six rules.
Thanksgiving and Black Friday, honestly
A no-spend November rarely gets hard on an ordinary Tuesday. It gets hard in the last week, when a holiday meal, travel and a long sale weekend arrive together. The fix is to decide now what you will do, write it down, and then follow your own plan.
Thanksgiving: Thursday, November 26
- If you are hosting, plan the menu by mid-month, check the pantry and freezer first, and write a single grocery amount for the meal on your contract. That amount is an essential this month. Anything beyond it is not.
- If you are a guest, bring something you can make from what you already have, or put one dish on your exceptions list with a price.
- If you are traveling, tickets and gas you already planned are fine. Snacks on the road and souvenirs are not, unless you wrote them down. Pack food for the trip.
- Make it a potluck. Ask everyone to bring one dish. It costs each person less, and nobody has to explain their budget.
Black Friday and Cyber Monday: November 27 and 30
Pick one approach before November 1 and write it on your contract.
- Wait it out. No purchases at all. Every want goes on your list, and the list waits until December 1. If something is still on it then, you can buy it, sale or no sale, knowing you actually want it.
- A short planned list. If there is something you were going to buy anyway, such as a gift you promised or a replacement for something broken, write it down in advance with a maximum price. On the day, buy only what is on that list, at or under that price, and close the tab.
Either approach is honest. What does not work is deciding on the day, with countdown timers running. A purchase you planned in October is part of your budget. A purchase you found on Friday morning is a want with a deadline attached.
Keep a want list
Every time you want something in November, write it down with the date and the price, and do not buy it. On December 1, read the list from the top. Some items will still feel right. Others will not, and you may not remember why you wanted them.
A week-by-week plan for November
| Days | Focus |
|---|---|
| Nov 1-7 | Sign your contract on Sunday. Unsubscribe from store emails, log out of shopping apps and list every subscription. Cancel or pause the ones you do not use. |
| Nov 8-14 | Cook from the pantry and freezer. Plan the Thanksgiving menu or what you will bring. Veterans Day sales on Wednesday, November 11 go on the want list. |
| Nov 15-21 | Write your December gift list with an amount next to each name. If you chose a planned Black Friday list, finish it this week. |
| Nov 22-28 | Thanksgiving week. Shop once for the meal, within your amount. On Black Friday, follow the plan you wrote, then go outside. |
| Nov 29-30 | The last weekend and Cyber Monday. Check in, review your purchase log and want list, and move what you kept into savings or your holiday budget. |
How to use this site for No Spend November
- Sign a contract with yourself. Open the contract builder with the no-spend rules filled in and November 1 to 30 selected. Check the dates, add your name, keep the rules that fit and add your Thanksgiving amount.
- Print the calendar. You get your signed contract and a calendar sheet with one box per day and your rules at the top. Circle Thanksgiving and Black Friday before you hang it up.
- Or save a wallpaper. A lock-screen wallpaper with your rules is a quiet reminder every time you reach for a shopping app.
- Check in every evening. The daily tracker keeps your streak visible and works offline. Nothing is sent to a server, and there is no account.
If you slip
A sale you could not resist or a coffee on a long day does not cancel the days you already kept. Mark the day honestly and go back to your rules the next morning. The contract's rule for this is never miss twice. A holiday weekend is where one slip most easily turns into four days, so decide the next morning that it stays at one.
After November
On December 1, read through your purchase log and your want list. Decide which spending you want back, which you do not, and what the money you kept is for. If November went well, No Spend January is a natural second round once the holidays are over.
Questions
When is No Spend November 2026?
It runs from Sunday, November 1 to Monday, November 30, 2026. That is 30 days, and it includes Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 26 and Black Friday on Friday, November 27.
What are the rules for No Spend November?
There is no official rulebook. Keep paying for essentials such as housing, bills, groceries from a list, medicine and transport, and wait on everything else. Most people add a set amount for Thanksgiving and a rule that every want goes on a list until December 1.
Can I shop on Black Friday during a no-spend month?
Only if you planned it. Before November 1, either decide to buy nothing and wait until December 1, or write a short list of things you were going to buy anyway, with a maximum price for each. Anything not on that list waits.
Do Thanksgiving groceries count as spending?
Food for the meal is an essential, so most people allow it as a planned exception with a set amount written into their rules. Shop once from a list, use what is already in the pantry and keep any extras within that amount.
Is there a free No Spend November printable?
Yes. The contract builder on this site prints your signed rules and a calendar with a box for each day from November 1 to 30. It is free, needs no account and can also be saved as a phone wallpaper.
