How to calculate a daily word count goal

Subtract your actual current total from your final target. Count the selected weekdays from the start date through the deadline, excluding extra rest dates. Divide the remaining words by those available days, round down, and distribute the leftover words to the first days. No fractional words or rounded-up total are added.

Example: 50,000 words in 30 days

With every day available and no words already written, write 1,667 words on the first 20 days and 1,666 on the last 10. That is exactly 50,000 words. If you have already written 10,000 and have 20 writing days left, the remaining plan is 2,000 words per writing day.

Update your progress without rewriting history

Enter the number of words you have actually written, move the start to the first day you still want to schedule, and calculate again. “Replan from today” changes the start date but does not calculate or assume any progress. The new schedule replaces the old one; this page does not keep a word-count diary.

Questions about writing plans

How is my daily word count calculated?

The calculator subtracts words already written from your target, then divides the remaining words among selected writing weekdays, excluding extra rest dates. Both start and deadline are included. Each writing day gets a whole-number target; any remainder is added one word at a time to the earliest writing days.

How do I update the plan after missing a writing day?

Enter your actual current word count and move the start date to your next writing day. Keep or change your deadline and rest dates, then calculate again. Changing an input clears the old result and its contract handoff; past planned targets are not counted as actual writing.

Can I use this for a 50,000-word November challenge?

Yes. The editable November 2026 example uses November 1 through November 30 and a 50,000-word target. With every day available and zero words already written, the first 20 days have 1,667 words and the last 10 days have 1,666. This is an independent calculator, not an official NaNoWriMo, ProWritingAid or other event service.

Does the tracker record my actual word counts?

No. The contract builder receives dates and readable rules referencing this plan. Its daily tracker records checkmarks, not word counts. Keep a printed or saved copy of the exact schedule and update your actual progress manually in this calculator.

Are my word counts or manuscript uploaded?

This tool does not request a manuscript, upload your inputs or save them between visits. Anonymous tool events describe actions or fixed error categories, not your word counts or rest dates. Applying a plan passes its readable rules to the same-site contract builder in your browser.

What if there are no writing days or my goal is already complete?

If words remain but no writing dates are available, change your weekdays, rest dates or date range. If your current total already meets or exceeds the target, the result confirms completion and does not create another writing contract. Plans can cover 1–366 days; contract handoff supports 7–366 days.
