Day 0 or day 1? The big date counts today as day 0, the way date calculators do, so it is exactly 66 days after today. A challenge counts its first day as day 1, so a 66-day challenge that starts today ends one day earlier, on the last day shown under the date.

66 days is 9 weeks and 3 days, so 66 days from today falls three days later in the week than today: from a Monday, it is a Thursday. The last day of a 66-day challenge that starts on a Monday is a Wednesday.

On the calendar, the number of whole months depends on the start date, because months have 28 to 31 days.

Why 66 days?

The number comes from a habit study at University College London. Phillippa Lally and colleagues asked volunteers to choose a new daily eating, drinking or exercise behaviour, such as having a piece of fruit with lunch, to do in response to a daily cue, and to rate every day for 12 weeks how automatic it felt. In the paper, published in the European Journal of Social Psychology in 2010, the median time to come close to full automaticity was 66 days. It is often quoted as the average time it takes to form a habit.

Two details matter more than the headline. First, the range was wide: from 18 to 254 days, and the longest estimates were projections beyond the 12 weeks the volunteers were followed. Second, the authors reported that missing a single day did not noticeably hold people back. So 66 days is a fair planning figure, not a promise, and one missed day is not a reason to stop.
